MORIAH AFRICA

About Moriah Africa

Vision & Purpose

For growth and development to be sustainable, for economies and societies to be healthy, interventions must begin with people.

Our focus is on people. Our goal is to see people helping people develop skills in order to build strong healthy communities.

Our vision is a vibrant expanding community of strong people serving God and each other in truth. We provide infrastructure, leadership, skills, and resources for a convergence of people with inspiration and the courage, commitment and desire to bring about change.

Background

In 1996, Noah and Gila Garaway were called to Central Africa to work in the aftermath of the genocide in Rwanda. Noah led an international relief agency’s efforts in the region. Gila worked as a consultant evaluating relief programs in Rwanda and in the neighboring refugee camps of Zaire.

It was a time of crisis, destabilization and change in the Great Lakes region of Africa. For Rwanda, it was a time of resettlement and massive movements of peoples. For Zaire, it was upheaval and a time of release from the many year oppressive non-development rule of Mobutu—the birth of present day Democratic Republic of Congo.

In 1997, Noah and a number of other African leaders were killed in a plane crash in the Haut Plateau of South Kivu, eastern DRC. Endeavoring to learn and understand, Gila continued to work in the region. In 2001 Moriah Africa was created in response to the challenges and diverse, profound needs.

Today Rwanda is a thriving country with tremendous hope for the future. DR Congo is a land of profound complexity, massive natural resources, corrupt failed systems, and entrenched insecurity.

We are currently operating in DRC, in Minembwe, a region which is in the interior high mountains of South Kivu province about 200 km. south of the provincial capital, Bukavu.
